The Best GEDmatch Alternatives for Ancestry from Your Raw DNA
GEDmatch stays the tool for relative-matching and adoption searches. For a private deep-ancestry breakdown from a raw file, you want something else.
If you want to find biological relatives or do genealogy, use GEDmatch. There is no real alternative, because its value is the database of other people's kits, and that is exactly what a private tool cannot copy.
If all you want is to understand your deep ancestry composition from a raw DNA file, without joining a matching database, you do not need GEDmatch at all. Those are two different jobs, and most "GEDmatch alternatives" lists blur them into one.

What GEDmatch actually does
GEDmatch is a comparison engine sitting on top of a shared pool of uploaded kits. You upload your raw file from AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage or FamilyTreeDNA, and it compares your DNA against everyone else who uploaded. The core tools are all about that comparison:
- One-to-many: ranks every kit in the database by how much DNA you share with them, in centimorgans. This is how you find matches you did not know existed.
- One-to-one: takes two specific kits and shows the exact shared segments, chromosome by chromosome.
- Admixture: estimates your ancestry proportions using several older academic models (Eurogenes, Dodecad, MDLP).
The matching tools depend on the database. Shared centimorgans only mean something if there are other kits to share them with. A cousin who shares 850 cM with you is roughly a first cousin, someone at 1,700 cM is a half-sibling or grandparent, and someone at 3,400+ cM is a parent or full sibling. Those thresholds are the whole point of adoption search, and they only work when both people have uploaded.
That is why no privacy-preserving tool can replace GEDmatch for matching. To find your relatives, your DNA has to be compared against theirs, which means both files sit in one place. The database is the feature.
When GEDmatch is still the right answer
Stay with GEDmatch, or go to it, if you are doing any of these:
- Searching for a biological parent, sibling or child.
- Working genealogy: confirming a family tree, breaking through a brick wall, triangulating a shared ancestor across multiple matches.
- Comparing two known kits to prove or disprove a specific relationship.
If you tested at AncestryDNA or 23andMe, those platforms have their own internal match lists too, often larger than GEDmatch. GEDmatch's advantage is that it pools people from different companies, so a match who tested at 23andMe can appear next to one who tested at Ancestry. For adoption search specifically, that cross-company pool plus DNA Detectives-style methodology is why people upload there.
GEDmatch's value is other people's DNA sitting next to yours. If you do not want that, you do not want GEDmatch, and that is a valid choice.
The private alternative for ancestry composition
Here is the split most lists miss. "Where do my ancestors come from" is not the same question as "who are my cousins". You can answer the first from your raw file alone, with no database, no upload of your identity, no comparison against strangers.
That is what HealthOS does at /dna. It reads the same raw file (the SNP text export from AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage or FamilyTreeDNA) and produces a deep-ancestry breakdown against the AADR Human Origins reference panel. No kit is added to any matching pool. Nobody else's DNA is involved.
The mechanism is different from relative-matching. Instead of counting shared segments with living people, it compares your genotypes against ancient and modern reference populations and estimates how your ancestry decomposes across them. "Deep" here means older population structure, the mix of ancestral groups that combined to make your recent ancestry, rather than "your third cousin lives in Ohio". You get proportions across reference populations, not a match list.
What you will not get, and should not expect:
- No relatives. No cousins, no one-to-many list, no shared-segment view.
- No adoption search. If that is your goal, this tool is the wrong one.
- No living-person surname or location matches.
The reference panel matters more than the marketing usually admits. AADR Human Origins is well populated for West Eurasian, some East Asian and some African groups, and thinner for others. If your ancestry is under-represented in the panel, the breakdown is coarser and more uncertain. That is true of every admixture tool, including GEDmatch's older models, and it is honest to say your result is only as fine-grained as the reference data behind it.
Is GEDmatch safe, and what happened with law enforcement
This is the follow-up most people have and few lists answer straight. GEDmatch was used to identify a suspect in a criminal case in 2018 by matching crime-scene DNA against uploaded kits. After that, GEDmatch changed its policy so law-enforcement matching is opt-in rather than default, and it was later acquired by Verogen, a forensic genomics company, then by Qiagen.
None of that makes GEDmatch useless. It means you should decide with open eyes. If you upload to any matching database, your DNA becomes searchable by other people who upload, and the terms governing who counts as "other people" can change with ownership. That is the trade you accept for finding relatives.
A private composition tool avoids the trade entirely, because there is no pool to be searched. If the law-enforcement angle is why you are looking for alternatives in the first place, the answer is not a different matching database. It is a tool that does not match at all.
The common mistake
People treat admixture percentages as if they were a match list, and they treat match lists as if they were ancestry. They are not interchangeable. Your shared centimorgans with a cousin tell you nothing about which ancient populations you descend from. Your Human Origins breakdown tells you nothing about which living cousin to email.
Decide which question you actually have before you pick a tool:
- "Who am I related to?" GEDmatch, or your testing company's own match list. You accept being in a database.
- "What is my ancestry made of?" A composition tool from your raw file. No database needed.
Both from the same raw file. Different jobs.
