WeGene Raw Data: How to Download It and Analyze It in English
WeGene (微基因) lets you export your raw genotype data. How to find the download, and how to read the file in English, free, with findings on food, medications and traits.
WeGene (微基因) lets you download your raw genotype data from your account, and you can analyze that file in English, free, at healthosx.com/dna. Choose the downloaded .txt on that page and your browser reads it on your device into findings on food, medication genes, heart health and traits, including several variants that matter most for East Asian ancestry. Your DNA story needs no account; the full report opens in the HealthOS app after a 6-digit code sent to your email.
How to download your WeGene raw data
WeGene's menus are in Chinese. The labels below are the ones you'll see:
- 1.Sign in at wegene.com on a computer browser.
- 2.Open your personal centre (个人中心), or go to Settings (设置) at the top right, then Privacy (隐私).
- 3.Choose the genetic data download (基因数据下载) and confirm with your password.
- 4.Download the file. WeGene may say it can take up to 48 hours to prepare; it's often ready sooner.
WeGene's genotype export is a plain text file with an rsID, chromosome, position and genotype on each line, the same shape as a 23andMe file. If you bought WeGene's whole-genome product, you want the VCF from its sequencing data download instead — see analyzing a whole-genome VCF.
Why an English reading is useful
WeGene's own reports are thorough, but they're in Chinese and live inside its app. The raw file lets you read the well-established findings in English and show them to a doctor anywhere.
A few findings matter especially for East Asian ancestry, and /dna reads each one:
- Alcohol flush (ALDH2 rs671). The variant behind the "Asian flush" is common in East Asia and rare elsewhere. The report shows whether you carry one copy or two, and two copies means very low tolerance.
- Lactose persistence. Most adults of East Asian ancestry don't carry a persistence variant, and the report says which way yours goes.
- CYP2C19. Reduced-function versions are notably common in East Asian populations, and this gene changes how you handle clopidogrel, several antidepressants and stomach-acid drugs. One caveat: the report reads the
*2and*17variants, not*3, which is more common in East Asia — so treat a "normal" result as less certain than it would be in a European file. - UGT1A1 `6`.** Linked to irinotecan toxicity, and more common in East Asian populations.
- Dry earwax (ABCC11). Common in East Asia, with noticeably less underarm odour as a side effect.

You also get caffeine clearance, folate, vitamin D, lipoprotein(a), statins (SLCO1B1), warfarin (CYP2C9 and VKORC1) and everyday traits.

Read on /dna in your browser, except ancestry, which — only if you agree — sends the markers it needs and keeps them with your result until you delete them.
The optional ancestry breakdown separates East Asia and Siberia from 12 other regions and ranks your closest populations among 56, including Han, Japanese, Dai, She and Mongola.

My file wasn't accepted.
Check that you downloaded the raw genotype data rather than a report, and that the download finished. Common rejection reasons.
Is my data sent to a server?
Not for the report, which runs in your browser. Ancestry, if you choose to run it, sends only the markers it needs and keeps them with your result until you delete them.
