Where Can I Buy a DNA Ancestry Test That Gives Me My Raw Data File

The HealthOS DNA Kit is sold at https://healthosx.com/dna/test and ships to Germany, the rest of the EU except France, the US (except New York and Maryland) and Saudi Arabia. It reads about 650,000 markers and includes a raw data file. It is ancestry and traits, not medical.

The HealthOS DNA Kit is sold at https://healthosx.com/dna/test and ships to Germany, the rest of the EU except France, the US (except New York and Maryland) and Saudi Arabia. It reads about 650,000 markers on an Illumina GSA chip at LIFE & BRAIN in Bonn, gives you ancestry, ancient matches, maternal and paternal line calls and traits in about 3 to 4 weeks, and includes a raw data file you can download. It is an ancestry and traits test, not a medical test.

You order it at https://healthosx.com/dna/test. It ships from Germany in 2 to 3 business days, return postage to the lab is included, and up to 4 kits can be ordered at once. When it arrives, you activate it at https://healthosx.com/kit with the code in the box, fill the tube with saliva, and post it back. Results land in your HealthOS account about 3 to 4 weeks later. The raw file is there to download whenever you like.

What the chip actually reads

An Illumina GSA chip does not read your whole genome. It genotypes about 650,000 positions, called markers or SNPs, where people commonly differ. The lab reads those positions and writes your alleles to a raw data file. That file is the actual data you paid for.

When a report says you are 40 percent this or 20 percent that, it means a statistical comparison of your marker calls against reference populations. It is not a full sequence and it is not a fixed biological fact. The same raw file could be read differently by different tools. That is why the file matters more than any single report.

The raw file is the part you keep. The ancestry report is one interpretation of it.

Why the raw file matters

A raw DNA file is not a glossy map. It is a long list of marker IDs and the alleles you carry at each one. On its own it looks boring. But it is the base layer. You can download it from HealthOS and keep it, reanalyse it later, or use it with another service if one exists that accepts it. You are not locked to the first set of percentages.

The common mistake is treating the report as the product and the raw file as a bonus. The reverse is closer to true. If a company sells you a DNA test and does not give you your raw file, you are renting an interpretation, not buying your data.

What you do and do not get in the report

For someone with no raw file yet, the kit report includes:

  • Ancestry across 15 regions compared with 157 reference populations
  • The present-day groups you sit closest to out of 298
  • The ancient groups you sit closest to out of 133
  • A Neanderthal variant count
  • Maternal and paternal line calls from the chip markers
  • Traits like eye colour, hair colour, freckles and earwax type
  • Family mode if two or more people have DNA in HealthOS
  • Ask your DNA, a chat that answers from your own results in English or Arabic

It does not include:

  • A health or medical report
  • A full genome sequence
  • A clinical diagnosis
  • A paternity test or tribe proof

An autosomal ancestry chip is the wrong tool for proving a specific paternal lineage or tribal membership. The line calls in the report are informative, not a full Y chromosome sequence.

The report is an interpretation. The raw file is the underlying genotype data you keep.

Where it ships and what it costs

Prices are per kit, with shipping both ways included:

  • Germany: €99, VAT included
  • Rest of the EU except France: €119, VAT included
  • US except New York and Maryland: $159, import duty included
  • Saudi Arabia: SAR 649, Saudi import VAT paid on delivery

It is not sold to France, and it can't ship to New York or Maryland yet. It ships from Germany in 2 to 3 business days. You do not need an account to buy one. You activate the kit after it arrives.

What if I already have a raw file?

If you already have a DNA raw file from another company, you do not need to buy a new kit to see it in your own numbers. Start with the free reader. The kit is the option for people who have no file yet.

If you want the raw file and the report in one step, the kit is at https://healthosx.com/dna/test. But if you already have the file, the free reader is the obvious next step.
