Best DNA Test for Arab and Middle Eastern Ancestry (2026): What Ships Where

The best DNA test for Arab ancestry depends on where you live: 23andMe and AncestryDNA ship to no Gulf country, Nebula has closed, and men comparing paternal lines use deep Y-DNA tests. A plain comparison of what each kit reads and where it ships.

The best DNA test for Arab and Middle Eastern ancestry is the one you can actually order where you live, and that reads the Middle East in detail. If you live in Saudi Arabia, 23andMe and AncestryDNA don't ship there at all, and the HealthOS DNA Kit does, at SAR 649 with shipping both ways included. In the US, Canada or Europe you can buy any of the big kits. 23andMe now has the most detailed Arabian Peninsula groups of the big brands. HealthOS adds ancient-population matches and Arabic results. FamilyTreeDNA is the place for tribal Y-DNA research.

Many "best DNA test for Arabs" lists still rank AncestryDNA first, although it can't be bought in the Middle East, and still recommend Nebula Genomics, which closed its consumer service in February 2025. This page sticks to what each company says on its own site today.

Most kits that reach Saudi Arabia through Amazon.sa are grey imports. AncestryDNA's return label is for the US, and 23andMe says a kit must be used and returned in the country it was shipped to. People in the Gulf mostly struggle with getting the sample back to the lab, not with buying the kit. Whatever you buy, check how the tube travels back before you pay.

23andMe. It reads the region well. Its reference populations include Peninsular Arab, Levantine, Egyptian and Coptic Egyptian groups. In September 2026 its ancestry team announced 163 new genetic groups across North Africa, Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula, 15 of them in Saudi Arabia. If you live in the US, Canada or the UK, it is a strong choice for Arabian detail.

AncestryDNA. It has the largest customer database, which matters for finding relatives. Its 2026 update adds Middle Eastern regions, but users report that the Arabian Peninsula is still one region. It does not ship to any Middle Eastern country.

MyHeritage. It is available in Arabic and does not exclude Saudi Arabia in its rules, although it says some countries can't get kits for logistics reasons. It excludes Lebanon and Syria. Ancient Origins, its ancient-ancestry feature, needs a subscription.

FamilyTreeDNA. This is where men compare Arab paternal lines. Its Arab Tribes project has more than 6,800 members and its Saudi Arabia project more than 1,400, and they work with the Big Y-700 test, which reads the deep branches of the paternal line. It ships to Saudi Arabia, with special handling for the return leg.

HealthOS DNA Kit. - Lab: a saliva kit read on an Illumina GSA chip (about 650,000 markers) at LIFE & BRAIN in Bonn, Germany. - Ancestry: your ancestry against 157 reference populations, the closest of 298 present-day groups, and the ancient peoples you sit closest to out of 133 ancient groups. - Lines and traits: your Neanderthal variant count, your maternal line and your paternal line's main branch, plus traits. - Arabic: the results, the site and the Ask your DNA chat all work in Arabic. - Raw file: yours to download. - Where it ships: Saudi Arabia, Germany, the rest of the EU except France, and the United States except New York and Maryland. It is not a health or medical test.

Can a DNA test tell me my tribe?

No, and no ancestry kit should promise it. A tribe is a family history, and lineage is established by family records and Sharia, not by a test. A chip test like ours, 23andMe's or MyHeritage's gives the main branch of your paternal line (for example J1, J2 or E). Even a deep Y-DNA test such as Big Y-700 can only show that two men share a paternal ancestor, and roughly when he lived. Many tribes share the same branch, and one tribe often carries several. Read more in Arab tribal lineage and DNA.

A sensible order: an autosomal test for your overall ancestry and relatives first. If you want to compare your paternal line with other men's, a deep Y test such as Big Y-700 and FamilyTreeDNA's projects are where that happens.

Already have a file from 23andMe, AncestryDNA or MyHeritage?

You don't need a new test to see your Middle Eastern ancestry in more depth. healthosx.com/dna reads your existing raw file for free, with 157 reference populations, ancient matches and Arabic results. A second test only makes sense if your file is very small or you want a test you can manage entirely in Arabic.

How to choose

  • You live in the US, Canada or Europe and want the most Arabian detail: 23andMe, or the HealthOS kit if you want ancient matches and Arabic results included with no subscription.
  • You want to find relatives: AncestryDNA or MyHeritage, which have the biggest databases.
  • You want to compare your paternal line with other men's: FamilyTreeDNA Big Y-700 and its Arab projects.

Common questions

What is the best DNA test for Arab ancestry?
It depends on where you live. In Saudi Arabia, 23andMe and AncestryDNA do not ship at all; the HealthOS DNA Kit does, at SAR 649 with shipping both ways included, with results and an AI chat in Arabic. In the US, Canada or Europe, 23andMe has the most detailed Arabian Peninsula groups of the big brands (15 Saudi groups added in September 2026), the HealthOS kit adds 133 ancient groups and Arabic results with no subscription, and FamilyTreeDNA Big Y-700 is the test Arab tribal projects use.
Which DNA tests ship to Saudi Arabia?
On their official country lists (checked 2026-10-03), 23andMe and AncestryDNA do not ship to Saudi Arabia or any other Gulf country. FamilyTreeDNA ships there, with special handling for the return. MyHeritage does not exclude Saudi Arabia in its rules but says some countries cannot get kits for logistics reasons. The HealthOS DNA Kit ships to Saudi Arabia for €149, shipping and VAT included.
Can a DNA test tell me which Arab tribe I am from?
No. A tribe is a family history, and lineage is established by family records and Sharia, not by a test. DNA, even a deep Y-DNA test such as Big Y-700, can only show that two men share a paternal ancestor and roughly when he lived. Many tribes share one branch, and one tribe carries several. Men who want to compare paternal lines use deep Y tests and FamilyTreeDNA projects.
