# Is There an Ancestry DNA Test With No Subscription or Membership?
Yes. The HealthOS DNA Kit is a one-time ancestry and traits test with no subscription after purchase. It costs $159 in the US as of 24 October 2026 and ships to every US state except New York and Maryland.
Is there an ancestry DNA test with no subscription or membership?
Yes. The answer is not a trick. Ancestry and traits results are computed once from a raw DNA file. A lab reads about 650,000 markers on an Illumina GSA chip, produces a genotype file, and the report is generated from that fixed file. Your DNA does not change. The report does not need a continuous stream of new lab work. A company may still ask for a subscription to keep accessing an online account or a relative-matching pool, but the underlying ancestry calculation is a one-time job.
No subscription is a business model choice, not a scientific requirement for ancestry results.
The $159 price is the whole price
The kit includes the saliva tube, return postage to the lab in Bonn, Germany, the chip read, the report, and a raw data file you can download. There is no premium tier after checkout. The price is $159 in the US, €99 in Germany, and €119 in the rest of the EU except France. The kit does not ship to France, New York or Maryland.
What you get:
- Ancestry across 15 regions and 157 reference populations
- Closest present-day groups out of 298 and ancient matches out of 133 ancient groups
- Neanderthal variant count
- Maternal line, and paternal line if you have a Y chromosome
- Traits such as eye colour and earwax type
- Family mode to compare two or more people
- Ask your DNA, plain-language questions about your own results
- Raw data file download
It is an ancestry and traits test, not a medical test. Kit results come with no health report.
Your DNA does not need a monthly bill
The mechanism matters. A raw file stores your genotypes at the markers the chip read. Once that file exists, ancestry percentages and trait calls are a computation, not a lab procedure. The sample can be destroyed. The file stays. Reference panels do get updated, which may shift percentages a little, but the raw data remains usable. Subscription fees are a business model, not a scientific requirement. Some companies bundle recurring charges for cloud storage, ongoing access, or new reports. The basic ancestry answer is a fixed output.
If you already have a raw file, use it free
This is the immediate follow-up. If you already tested with 23andMe, AncestryDNA or MyHeritage and still have your raw file, you do not need a new kit. The free reader at healthosx.com/dna reads that file so you can see ancestry and traits information from it. No subscription. You can get value from a test you already paid for.
Big brands still win at cousin matching
The large companies have one genuine advantage: millions of people in their relative-matching databases. If your goal is to find unknown cousins or build a family tree through shared segments, the size of the database is the whole game. The kit has family mode for linking relatives who also have their DNA in the same system, but it is not a large public matching pool. For ancestry percentages, traits, and raw data access, a one-time test is enough. For finding relatives, the major companies are still ahead.
No health report comes with this kit
If you want a health risk report, this is not that product. The kit reports ancestry and traits. It does not interpret disease risk or give medical advice. Some people use raw data with third-party tools, but those tools have their own accuracy limits and privacy policies. Worth reading them carefully.
What to ask before you buy any test
The one thing people get wrong is assuming all DNA tests are equal on privacy. Before buying, ask what happens to the sample, whether the lab sees your name, where the data sits, and whether you can download and delete it. This kit uses a code on the tube, the lab destroys the sample after analysis, the lab is in Germany under GDPR, and the raw file is yours to download and delete. The same questions are useful for any company.
If you already have a raw file, start with the free reader at healthosx.com/dna. If you have no file yet, the HealthOS DNA Kit at https://healthosx.com/dna/test is the one-time way to get one.
