What a DNA test can and can’t say about tribe and nasab
What it can show
- Which regions and present-day populations your DNA is closest to.
- Your maternal line, and your paternal (Y) line if you have a Y chromosome, and where each one comes from.
- How much DNA you share with a relative who also tests, in family mode.
What it can’t do
- A DNA test can’t confirm a tribe or a nasab. Lineage, and the rights that come with it, rest on family records and Sharia, not on a lab result.
- It can’t settle a family or lineage dispute, and we never rank one lineage above another.
- Two men who share a Y line share a paternal ancestor, often many generations back. That doesn’t say which family or tribe the ancestor belonged to.

How does my sample get to the lab?

Can a DNA test tell my tribe or confirm my nasab?
No. A DNA test can’t confirm a tribe or a nasab. It shows which populations your DNA is closest to, and your paternal and maternal lines. Lineage, and the rights that come with it, rest on family records and Sharia, not on a lab result.
Are the results in Arabic?
Yes. The report, the app and Ask your DNA all work in Arabic.
Is this a health test?
No. It is an ancestry and traits test. It is not a medical or diagnostic test, and kit results come with no health report.
Who analyses my sample, and what happens to it?
LIFE & BRAIN GmbH in Bonn, Germany, reads it on an Illumina GSA chip, about 650,000 markers. The tube carries only a code. The lab destroys the sample after genotyping, and your file is stored encrypted in your account until you delete it.
How long does it take?
We ship within 2–3 business days. Your results appear in your HealthOS account about 3–4 weeks after your sample is picked up, and we email you when they are ready.
Can I give it as a gift?
Yes. A kit is linked to a person when it is activated, not when it is bought, so whoever uses it activates it with their own HealthOS account.
Can I download my raw data?
Yes. The raw file from the chip is yours to download from your account at any time.
