Check the lactose intolerance gene from raw DNA

Whether you still digest milk as an adult is set by a switch near the lactase gene, and different populations evolved different ones. This page reads the European (rs4988235) and the Arabian (rs41380347) switch, which most tools skip, and shows the row of our lactase guide your letters fall in.

It runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, there is no account, and it is free. We count that a check ran and whether the positions were in your file, never your result.

Questions

How do I find the lactose intolerance gene in my 23andMe raw data?

Drop the raw file on healthosx.com/dna/genes/lactase. It reads rs4988235 (an A on the plus strand is the European persistence allele) and rs41380347 (a C is the Arabian one) in your browser and shows what our lactase guide says about your letters. Free, no account, never uploaded.

Which variant do most tools check?

Usually just rs4988235, the European one. If your ancestry is Arabian, Levantine or East African, a tool that checks only that position can get your result backwards.

Is lactose intolerance the same as a milk allergy?

No. A milk allergy is an immune reaction to milk protein and can be serious. Lactose non-persistence is a digestive enzyme difference.
