Check alpha-1 antitrypsin from raw DNA

Two positions in SERPINA1, Z (rs28929474) and S (rs17580), give your Pi type: MM, MS, MZ, SS, SZ or ZZ. This page reads them and shows the row of our alpha-1 guide your letters fall in.

It runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, there is no account, and it is free. We count that a check ran and whether the positions were in your file, never your result.

Questions

How do I check alpha-1 antitrypsin from my 23andMe raw data?

Drop the raw file on healthosx.com/dna/genes/alpha-1. It reads Z (rs28929474, T is the Z allele) and S (rs17580, A is the S allele) in your browser and shows your Pi type with what our alpha-1 guide says about it. Free, no account, never uploaded.

I’m MZ. Does it matter?

Usually not on its own. It shifts the risk if you smoke or work around dust and fumes, which makes those choices more consequential for you than for most people.

Can a chip get this wrong?

Yes. A chip can miscall any position, and rarer deficiency alleles (null variants, M-malton) aren’t on it at all. A ZZ result from a chip needs confirming with a blood level.
