What it measures
A protein made by the prostate. It rises with prostate cancer, but also with benign enlargement, infection, cycling and recent ejaculation, which is why one raised value proves nothing.
What moves it
Age and prostate size, plus recent cycling, ejaculation, catheterisation or infection — all of which can raise it temporarily. Worth repeating before drawing conclusions.
How to bring it into range
Avoid cycling and ejaculation for two days before the test. A raised result should be repeated before any further step.
