What it measures

The unconjugated fraction, not yet processed by the liver. It rises when red cells break down faster than usual and in Gilbert’s syndrome, a harmless and very common variant.

What moves it

Fasting, dehydration, intense exercise and red-cell turnover. Harmlessly raised in Gilbert syndrome, which affects roughly 1 in 20 people.

How to bring it into range

A mildly raised level that goes up with fasting, illness or stress and comes with normal liver enzymes is usually Gilbert’s, which needs nothing done about it.
