What it measures

Alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme from liver, bile ducts and bone. Because bone contributes, it is naturally higher in growing adolescents and in pregnancy.

What moves it

Comes from liver and bone both, so it rises in bone growth, pregnancy and bile-flow problems. Normally high in adolescents.

How to bring it into range

If it is raised, GGT separates a liver or bile cause from a bone one: GGT rises with the former and not the latter.

How fast it responds

Weeks.

Common questions

What is the normal alkaline phosphatase range?
The normal alkaline phosphatase range is 44 – 121 U/L for adults. Labs differ a little, so also check the range printed on your report.
What does a high Alkaline Phosphatase mean?
A value above the reference band means Alkaline Phosphatase is outside the range typical for a healthy adult. A single reading is rarely conclusive on its own — what matters is the trend across draws and the other markers around it, which is why HealthOS reads the whole panel together rather than one number at a time.
How do I improve my Alkaline Phosphatase?
If it is raised, GGT separates a liver or bile cause from a bone one: GGT rises with the former and not the latter.
