What it measures

Serum magnesium, a cofactor in hundreds of enzyme reactions including muscle relaxation and blood-sugar control. Blood holds only about one per cent of your total, so a normal result does not rule out low stores.

What moves it

Nuts, greens and whole grains, alongside alcohol, some diuretics and gut absorption. Blood magnesium is a poor guide to total body stores — most of it sits in bone and cells.

How to bring it into range

Nuts, seeds, legumes and dark leafy greens. Glycinate and citrate are absorbed better than oxide and are gentler on the gut.

What does a high Magnesium mean?
A value above the reference band means Magnesium is outside the range typical for a healthy adult.
