What it measures
The calcium circulating in your blood, which your body holds in a very narrow band by pulling from bone when it has to. It says little about how much calcium is in your skeleton.
What moves it
Tightly regulated by parathyroid hormone and vitamin D rather than by how much calcium you eat, so it barely moves with diet. Albumin level affects the reading.
