Mean Platelet Volume: normal range and what it means
Average platelet size.
Normal range
Adult reference range.
- Low< 7.5 fL
- Normal7.5 – 11.5 fL
- High≥ 11.5 fL
What it measures
The average size of your platelets. Larger platelets are younger and more active, so a high value can mean the marrow is replacing them quickly.
What moves it
Reflects how young the circulating platelets are. Rises when the marrow is replacing platelets quickly.
How to bring it into range
Interpreted with the platelet count rather than alone. On its own it changes very little.
How fast it responds
Seven to ten days.

Common questions
- What is a normal Mean Platelet Volume level?
- Normal: 7.5 – 11.5 fL. Adult reference range.
- What does a high Mean Platelet Volume mean?
- A value above the reference band means Mean Platelet Volume is outside the range typical for a healthy adult. A single reading is rarely conclusive on its own — what matters is the trend across draws and the other markers around it, which is why HealthOS reads the whole panel together rather than one number at a time.
- How do I improve my Mean Platelet Volume?
- Interpreted with the platelet count rather than alone. On its own it changes very little.
