What it measures
How concentrated the haemoglobin is inside each red cell. Unusually high values often point to a lab artefact or to spherocytosis rather than to anything you did.
What moves it
Iron status and, at the high end, sample handling or red-cell fragility. Modest deviations are often technical rather than biological.
How to bring it into range
An isolated abnormal result is worth repeating before anyone acts on it.
