What it measures
How fast red cells settle in a tube, which rises when inflammatory proteins make them clump. It is slow, non-specific and still useful for tracking a known condition over months.
What moves it
Rises slowly with infection, injury and inflammatory conditions, and drifts up with age, anaemia and pregnancy. Non-specific — it says something is going on, not what.
How to bring it into range
It follows whatever is driving it rather than moving on its own. Hs-CRP responds faster and is the better first test.
How fast it responds
Weeks, and it lags well behind CRP in both directions.
