Blood glucose converter: mg/dL ↔ mmol/L

To turn mg/dL into mmol/L, divide by 18 (exactly 18.0182). To turn mmol/L into mg/dL, multiply by 18. So 100 mg/dL is 5.6 mmol/L, and 7.8 mmol/L is 140 mg/dL.

How it is worked out

mmol/L = mg/dL ÷ 18.0182 mg/dL = mmol/L × 18.0182

The factor is glucose’s molar mass, 180.16 g/mol, over 10 (a decilitre is a tenth of a litre). Many reports round it to 18, which changes results by 0.1 at most. The US, and many Arab and Asian countries, use mg/dL; the UK, Canada, Australia and most of Europe use mmol/L.

Questions people ask

How do I convert mg/dL to mmol/L for blood glucose?
Divide by 18. For example, 90 mg/dL ÷ 18 = 5.0 mmol/L, and 180 mg/dL = 10.0 mmol/L. To go back, multiply mmol/L by 18.
Is the conversion the same for HbA1c?
No. HbA1c is in % or mmol/mol, and those convert with a different formula: mmol/mol = (% − 2.15) × 10.929. Use the HbA1c ↔ average glucose calculator for it.
Which countries use mg/dL and which use mmol/L?
mg/dL is used in the United States, Saudi Arabia and much of the Gulf, Germany (alongside mmol/L), and many Asian countries. mmol/L is used in the UK, Canada, Australia and most of Europe. Your sensor app lets you switch.
